Barbara Jordan was the first African American woman elected to the Texas Senate and the first African American woman from a Southern state elected to the US House of Representatives. She gave the keynote address to the Democratic National Convention in 1976, the first woman to do so. A recipient of many awards, in 2011 she was honored by the issuance of a US postal stamp in her name and image.
