In Brief:

Barbara Gittings was known as “…the mother of the GLBT civil rights movement.” A librarian by training, Barbara founded the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) in 1958 and edited its magazine The Ladder from 1963-1966. She campaigned successfully for the removal of homosexuality form the American Psychiatric Association’s list of mental disorders and was a crusader for the inclusion of gay literature in all library collections.
